The Ultimate Trinidad Carnival Guide
Your Carnival Dreams Start Here If Trinidad Carnival isn’t already on your travel vision board, go grab a pen. This isn’t just a party; it’s an experience. A vibrant, powerful celebration of culture, freedom, and joy. For millennial women of color, especially solo travelers or first-timers, it’s the trip of a lifetime. But it does take planning. So consider this your all-in-one, save-it-and-share-it guide to doing Trinidad Carnival right.
Planning Ahead: Time Is Everything Let’s be real. Carnival is a high-demand, bucket list event. That means accommodations, flights, and bands sell out fast. If you’re serious, start planning at least 9 to 12 months in advance. Yes, a year out.
Book your accommodations early. Most people stay in Port of Spain. Options range from boutique hotels to all-inclusive guesthouses. Some Carnival concierge services also bundle hotels with transportation and costume packages.
Secure your flight as soon as airlines open their calendars. Flights get pricey fast.
Consider travel insurance for peace of mind, especially since this is a nonrefundable kind of trip.
Costumes 101: Picking Your Band & Look Your Carnival costume isn’t just an outfit. It’s your passport to the road.
Choose a band. Bands like Tribe, Yuma, Rogue, and Bliss are known for their beautiful designs and good vibes. Register early, as sections sell out quickly.
Backline vs. Frontline. Backline costumes are more affordable and simpler. Frontline options include bigger headpieces, more gems, more glam, and a higher cost.
Fit and comfort. You’ll be wearing this all day in the heat, so make sure it fits well. Many bands offer custom sizing. Also, make sure to pack tights to wear under your costume to prevent chafing.
Bonus tip: Bring fashion tape, extra gems, and body glue. And please break in your boots!
Makeup & Hair: Keep It Cute (and Practical) It’s going to be hot. You’ll be sweaty. But you’ll still want to serve looks.
Makeup. Book with local MUAs who specialize in Carnival glam. Many offer mobile services that come to your hotel.
Hair. Think easy, protective styles. Knotless braids, faux locs, cornrows, or a curly wig you can slick back and go. Avoid anything that needs too much daily styling.
Bring edge control, gel, travel-size hairspray, and a satin scarf. Trust me.
*You’ll also need something to protect your hair from paint and powder if you choose to participate in Jouvert. Shop all of my carnival faves here!
ccommodations & Transportation
Where to stay. Port of Spain is the heart of the action. Look for stays near Queen’s Park Savannah or in Woodbrook.
How to move. Taxis and private drivers are common. Apps like Drop Taxi or TT RideShare can help. Some bands offer shuttles on Carnival day.
Carnival concierge services. Want it stress-free? Companies like Ultimate Trinidad Carnival or Bacchanal Road offer packages including hotel, airport transfer, costume pickup, and more.
Fetes: The Parties You Can’t Miss Carnival is way more than just the parade. Fetes are the heartbeat of the experience. They range from wild boat rides to luxe all-inclusives.
Must-attend fetes include Soca Brainwash, A.M. Beach, Caesar’s Army A.M. Bush, Vale Vibe, and Silent Morning.
Fetes sell out fast, so start building your lineup early. Many use sites like Ticket Federation or Island eTickets.
Wear waterproof makeup, dance-appropriate shoes, and always stay hydrated.
Connectivity & Safety
Cell service. Get a local SIM card or an international data plan. Digicel and Bmobile are the main providers.
Safety tips. Stay with your crew, don’t flash valuables, and keep cash tucked away. Use a small crossbody or belt bag.
Solo travel tip. Many travelers link up through Facebook groups or social media before Carnival even starts. Don’t be shy. Community is everything.
