Vibes, Views & Vino: My Journey Through South Africa

From Durban to Cape Town: A Soulful South African Journey Through Style, Culture, and Connection

They say when you travel solo, you meet parts of yourself you didn’t know existed. My recent journey through South Africa, hosted by South African Tourism and Cape Town Tourism, was just that. A soulful exploration through vibrant cities, rich cultural traditions, unforgettable fashion moments, and deep connections. From the colorful coastlines of Durban to the scenic soul of Cape Town, I left with stories etched into my spirit and style that celebrated the beauty of Africa. If South Africa isn’t already on your travel list, this is your sign.

Durban: Where Culture, Community & Coastal Vibes Collide

I started this journey solo in Durban, but I quickly connected with a diverse group of fellow media creators and journalists, all hosted by South African Tourism. What began as a solo trip evolved into a shared experience full of storytelling, laughter, and discovery.

The iconic Oyster Box Hotel was like stepping into a postcard—ocean views, colonial charm, and impeccable service. It also made the perfect backdrop for my wardrobe, which featured bold, beautiful looks from African designers throughout the trip (shop my looks here).

Our visit to PheZulu Safari Park was a cultural deep dive. Traditional Zulu dancing and drumming brought us into a world of rhythm and heritage that was both vibrant and moving.

Durban’s nightlife? Effortless and electric. We explored local lounges with great amapiano music and warm, welcoming energy. The city truly comes alive after dark.

One major highlight was attending INDABA, Africa’s largest travel trade show. It was a perfect blend of business and inspiration—meeting tourism professionals, attending fashion showcases, and learning about what’s ahead for African travel. I walked away proud to be part of this industry.

Our stop at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site offered a moment of reflection. Standing in a place that carries so much history and weight made me pause and take it all in—South Africa holds so many stories that deserve to be felt, not just told. Afterward, we visited Highgate Wine Estate for a relaxing wine tasting experience surrounded by the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the emotional impact of the day. Cape Town: Scenic Beauty Meets Soulful Storytelling

Cape Town welcomed us with breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences. We kicked things off with a helicopter tour courtesy of NAC Helicopters, offering panoramic scenes of the coastline that felt straight out of a movie. From there, we rode along the Atlantic Seaboard in vintage sidecars—an adventurous, stylish way to arrive.

Our time in Cape Town was a perfect mix of relaxation, exploration, and cultural immersion. From watching penguins waddle along Boulders Beach to sipping wines at Cape Point Vineyards with mountain and ocean views in the background, every moment felt like a gift.

Bo-Kaap was a true highlight. We joined a Cape Malay cooking class inside a family’s home, learning traditional recipes and stories passed down through generations. We left with more than just spices—we left with a deeper appreciation for the community.

One of the most impactful days was spent in Khayelitsha with ABCD Tours. We walked through the township to see how the locals live and were blown away by the joy and pride in the community. A group of children performed for us, and their energy was infectious—they even pulled us into their dances! We shared a meal made together with local women (yes, chicken feet were on the menu), joined in a drumming session, and donated clothing to those in need. It was a powerful reminder that real, human connection is the most meaningful souvenir.

Evenings in Cape Town had their own charm. We enjoyed live jazz at The Athletic Club and Social—smooth sounds in an old-world setting—and ended our trip with a high-energy, interactive dinner at Spyced Restaurant. Picture this: drums at the table, incredible food, and guests invited to join the performance. A perfect ending.

And of course, fashion was front and center throughout. Whether navigating a wine tasting in the rain at De Grendel or dining under the city lights on Kloof Street, my wardrobe celebrated African artistry every step of the way (shop the looks here).

Final Thoughts: A Homecoming of the Heart

This trip to South Africa was more than an itinerary—it was an emotional, cultural, and creative homecoming. As a solo traveler and a woman of color, being embraced by such beauty, resilience, and joy was affirming in every way.

If you're a millennial traveler looking for something deeper—something that feeds the soul as much as it dazzles the eyes—consider this your sign. South Africa is full of style, spirit, and stories that leave a mark.
